How does one reconcile the Satanic black metal vision with the life-force found in a seed? ![]() We must give our due to those who walk the left-hand path with honor, but we aspire to more. It is a deep well of knowledge and power. Satanic metaphysics is fine for the hermit and the ascetic. Often, this kingdom is his suburban bedroom where he masturbates and dreams of greatness. But what does one do with this knowledge and power? The black metal superman keeps it for himself, sees himself as the god of his own kingdom, his magnificent spirit bowing before none. It is axiomatic in occult study that we all contain the divine spark that the earth around us is divine. ![]() Satanism has nothing to do with our vision. We take from black metal what we wish and let the chaff blow away. Wolves in the Throne Room play music that draws upon black metal. Listening to true black metal, we are touched by this uncompromising and extreme expression, for it puts a name to the deep rage and sadness that is a part of our soul. ![]() It is not a call for a specific political program it does not provide a map out of the darkness in black metal, the depth of sadness is boundless and infinite. The important thing about black metal is that it expressed a pure cry for the utter destruction of the modern world – it is a cry of sorrow, hopelessness and pain. Satanism and obsession with gruesome and morbid imagery is not important to us. Wolves in the Throne Room's "manifesto" taken from the band’s official site explains in depth the band’s views on Satanism, Fascism, Feminism, Black Metal and the Apocalypse:īlack Metal was a localized eruption of emotion that was profound and powerful in its time and place, but has now lapsed into self-reference and banality. In interviews, Aaron states that it was the brothers' goal to create a musical expression of an expanding consciousness that linked the mythic and apocalyptic visions of black metal with “life-changing actions on the physical plane.” The band was formed April of 2003 when Nathan and his brother, drummer Aaron Weaver, moved to an old farmstead, named Calliope, on the outskirts of Olympia, WA and began working on the music that would become the 2004 Demo with second guitarist Nick Paul Paul would leave amicably later in 2004, with Richard Dahlen replacing him for the band's first two LPs, and former Middian guitarist Will Lindsay stepping in later. Nathan Weaver, the band's vocalist and guitarist, says that he conceived the vision for the band and wrote the first two songs “Wolves in the Throne Room” and “Black Tea” at an Earth First! rendezvous in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in 2002 the group has often performed outdoors and has expressed support for radical environmentalism. Their blend of philosophy and professing 'humbleness before nature's power' sets them apart from most other black metal acts on the scene today. Early on, the band received critical acclaim from black metal sources due to their extremely deep and textured music as well as epic songs reaching almost 25 minutes in length.
